What is the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program?

The Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program (IALP) is a 19-month advanced leadership development experience designed to cultivate leaders who shape the future of Illinois agriculture.

The curriculum blends leadership development, communication, civic engagement, global awareness, and systems thinking to prepare participants to address complex challenges in agriculture. Through seminars and applied learning, participants build skills aligned with the IALF Competency Model, which focuses on

What is the time commitment?

Participants attend approximately 55 seminar days over 19 months, typically meeting every 4–6 weeks for 2–3 days per session. Sessions are held across Illinois and include travel to Washington, D.C. and an international study experience. Participants are expected to attend all sessions.​

Do I need to take time off work? 

Yes. This program requires a significant time investment, and participants are expected to attend all seminars. Many employers view participation as a professional development opportunity and are highly supportive. We recommend applicants speak with their employer early in the process to secure support.

Is there an international component? 

Yes. The program concludes with a two-week capstone international seminar that exposes participants to global agricultural systems, policy, and trade. Previous destinations have included South America, Asia, and Europe

Who is eligible to apply?

The program is open to individuals between the ages of 25 and 50 who are actively engaged in agriculture or a related field in Illinois. Candidates must live in Illinois or an adjoining county and have a sphere of influence within Illinois agriculture.

Ideal participants include professionals in production agriculture, agribusiness, education, policy, or rural community development who are ready to expand their leadership capacity and contribute to the future of Illinois agriculture.

What is the cost of the program?

Tuition varies by class year and is subject to change. This information will be shared well in advance of when final applications are due. It covers seminar materials, lodging, meals, and travel for both national and international experiences.

Many participants receive financial assistance, employer sponsorship, or community support to help offset their portion of the tuition.

What is the application and selection process?
  1. Online Application – Applicants complete a form detailing their professional experience and leadership goals.

  2. Letters of Recommendation – Required from individuals who can speak to the applicant’s character and potential.

  3. Interviews – Selected applicants will participate in an interview with a regional screening committee.

Is there an application fee?

No. There is no fee to apply to the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program.
